Message from PresidentProject Discovery assists low and moderate income students and first generation college attendees in overcoming the educational, cultural and financial barriers to obtaining a college education. The program is offered in 22 broad based community organizations throughout Virginia. Research has proven that low income students need more individualized attention to encourage and prepare them for higher education. The case load facing high school guidance counselors leaves little time for individual attention. Through Project Discovery, students attend goal-setting and financial awareness workshops, tour college campuses, attend cultural events, and enhance their self-esteem through involvement in their communities. Nationally, guidance counselors have only 20 minutes a year per student. By the time they are handed their diplomas, Project Discovery students are well-rounded and productive members of their communities—ready to start their college careers. How can you help? You can help by (a) becoming a life member of Friends of Project Discovery, (b) serving as a volunteer on local advisory boards, (c) advocating for Project Discovery with Virginia legislators, and/or (d) advocating for Project Discovery with philanthropic organizations that support educational causes. Education is a critical key in reducing poverty for today’s youth and their future families. One student’s education will ripple through generations to come. Sincerely,
Curtis L. Wilson
