College Search Sites

Deciding which colleges to apply to and ultimately deciding where to go is a daunting decision. Finding accurate information to pick the college that is the right match and fit can be overwhelming for students. Here are two college search tools that leave rankings behind and offer helpful profiles about colleges and universities.

Look for the College That's Right for You . . .  http://www.ucan-network.org/
The University & College Accountability Network (U-CAN) is a free, consumer-friendly college search tool consisting of hundreds of institutional profiles, presenting - in a common, easy-to-understand, comparable format - information that prospective students and their families told us were critical in making informed college choices.  Users are able to create a customized search of the nation's nonprofit, private colleges and universities using 17 different measures, including tuition, admissions criterion, debt at graduation, number of students, retention and graduation rates, degrees offered, location, and more. Further, U-CAN has its own Facebook page, YouTube Channel and Blog, allowing students and families to connect with one another and share their experiences, concerns and questions, while U-CAN's "Planning to Go" page offers links to key resources and advice on how to prepare for college, find the best fit, and navigate the admissions and financial aid processes.

College Portrait of Undergraduate Education  - http://www.collegeportraits.org/
College Portrait is a source of basic, comparable information about public colleges and universities presented in a user-friendly format. It is designed to be trustworthy source of reliable data for prospective students and their families.

College Portrait is sponsored by two nonprofit organizations in Washington DC - the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). AASCU and APLU represent more than 500 public colleges and universities across the United States. Over half of the 500 member institutions - nearly 300 at last count - will be posting their College Portraits within the next few months.
